Does the selling ever stop?: Borussia Dortmund

Over recent years Borussia Dortmund fans have endured painful season after painful season. Despite reaching a Champions League Final Dortmund have lost a handful of players along the way. In spite of this they secured 2nd place in the Bundesliga last season, unfortunately being pipped to the post by arch rivals Bayern Munich. So which players have abandoned ship along they way and is loyalty merely a thing of the past?

Borussia Dortmund

Shinji Kagawa: Manchester United (£12 million) July 2012

The Japanese midfielder has since returned to Dortmund after a forgettable 2 years in Manchester. He marked the first of a talented and promising selection of Dortmund players to seek their chances elsewhere. Now at 27 years of age Kagawa has rekindled his career with 9 goals and 7 assists to his name alone last season.

Mario Gotze: Bayern Munich (£31 million) July 2013

Gotze left to Dortmund's rivals Bayern Munich and as a result was berated by fans and labelled as a traitor. Fortunately for the German CAM he is not the only one to make the treacherous journey to the enemy from Dortmund. However Gotze has struggled for game time at Munich and is being readied for a £19 million return to Dortmund, to the joy of some fans and disgust of others who still see him as disloyal.

Robert Lewandowski: Bayern Munich (free) January 2014

Lewandowski is perhaps Dortmund's biggest loss, especially given he went for less than a penny! Lewandowksi will be remembered for 4 goals against Real Madrid in 2013 and finishing as top scorer in the Bundesliga the next season. In total the Pole netted 74 times in just 131 appearances for Dortmund, he's gone one better at Munich however with 47 goals in as few as 63 games, including 5 goals in just 9 minutes!

Jurgen Klopp: Liverpool FC

Dortmund's passionate and charismatic manager of 7 years left Dortmund in 2015 in desire of a sabbatical. Klopp was loved dearly by everyone involved at Dortmund and words such as traitor or backstabber were never uttered in the same sentence as his name. Klopp's break ended earlier than expected when he joined up with Liverpool in October 2015 which has so far been a positive campaign for the 49 year old.

Matt Hummels: Bayern Munich (£28 million) July 2016

The former Dortmund captain is set to join his German defensive partner, Boateng at Bayern Munich and reunite with the likes of Lewandowski. In spite of over 200 caps for Dortmund the 27 year old left Dortmund in search of Champions League glory, to add alongside his World Cup Winners medal. Many will be questioning whether Dortmund would themselves see glory if the 6ft3 defender opted to stay.

Ilkay Gundogan: Manchester City (£20 million) July 2016

The central midfielder is not the only former Dortmund man to leave to Manchester this summer. The 25 year old has seen his career plagued by injury yet this did not prevent him scoring in the Champions League Final in an eventual 2-1 loss to who else but Bayern. At the club since 2011 the German racked up over a 100 matches at Dortmund, only one came in 2013/14 however thanks to another long-term injury. Gundogan goes to Man City in search of frequent game time and glory to try and cement a spot in the German squad.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan: Manchester United (£26 million) July 2016

The Armenian captain boasts some of the most impressive stats around for the 2015/2016 season, not many others registered 26 goals and assists combined in their most recent campaign. Dortmund will be disappointed not to have sold the winger on for more than £26 million, especially seeing they signed him for £23 million from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2014, however contract issues meant Dortmund's wallets still looked rather bare.

Total sales: £117 million

Is loyalty and talent a thing of the past at Dortmund?

Despite losing so many world class players Dortmund ended the 2015/2016 campaign as comfortable runners up, 18 points clear of Bayer Leverkusen in third place. Munich inevitably topped the league yet Dortmund will be hoping it's a different story next season thanks to the likes of:

Marco Reus:
The pacey winger netted 12 times last season in addition to 3 assists to finish as Dortmund's second highest scorer. Reus is now seemingly free from injury and at his astounding best, he will feel deject to have been cut from the Germany Euros squad at the very last stage. Reus has been at Dortmund since 2012 and stayed true to the yellow jersey in spite of the departure of friends Lewandowski and Gotze along the way. The 27 year old is to be rewarded for 49 goals in 107 appearances with the captain's armband next season.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang:
The quickest man around certainly isn't running to Bayern anytime soon. Despite being linked with moves to Atletico Madrid and Manchester City it seems like the Gabonese striker will be in Dortmund colours next season. Fans would love to see the man who scored 25 last season up front alongside Reus in what is still a formidable attack despite the loss of Mkhitaryan.
